Roadworks at the junction of High Street, Dark Lane, New Road and Freshford Lane, Freshford - 13th February to 1st March 2015

The long-awaited works to improve safety at the crossroads by the school will begin when the school closes for the half-term break on 14th February. A drawing showing what will be implemented is shown here. There will be times during this period when the road will be closed completely and diversions will be signposted on the A36 and wherever necessary to ensure that through traffic takes alternative routes. B&NES’s Transport department is in discussion with Libra Travel concerning the changes that will be necessary to the routing and timetable of the No 94 bus.

In addition to diversions signs on the A36 and elsewhere there will be Road Closed signs at the north end of Dark Lane where it meets New Road and at the south end of Church Hill where it meets the High Street. There will be Road Closed signs at both ends of Rosemary Lane also. Through traffic will be barred but residents will be able to pass.

It had been intended that all work would be completed before the school reopens on 23rd February but because a survey of the drainage in the area has revealed a need for repair and improvement to the culvert that runs beneath the road the total time necessary for both the road and drainage works will run through the second week but this will not involve a total closure of the roads; a traffic management scheme will be in operation. However, a further and final total closure will be necessary during the weekend of 28th February and 1st March.

The works when they are finished won’t be as elegant as many of us had hoped for or could be afforded but the layout has changed very little and there has always been the same purpose: to make the junction safer for everyone who uses it: pedestrians of all ages, cyclists and vehicles.
